Deputy Martin L. Shields, Jr. was a devoted father, son, and public servant whose life was defined by faith, service, and an unwavering commitment to protecting others. A proud graduate of Lanier High School (Class of 2006), Martin pursued his passion for law enforcement after attending Hinds Community College, completing his training at the Mississippi Law Enforcement Officers Training Academy in 2016.
Martin's career in law enforcement was marked by honor and dedication. He served with several agencies, including Jackson State University, the Jackson Police Department, the Ridgeland Police Department, and the Hinds County Sheriff’s Department. Throughout his career, Martin earned numerous accolades and was a stellar officer until he was killed in the line of duty on February 23, 2025.
His life and legacy continue through the Martin L. Shields, Jr. Foundation, honoring his spirit of service, love, and sacrifice for his community.
The Deputy Martin Luther Shields, Jr. Foundation exists to honor the legacy of a dedicated public servant who lived a life of courage, compassion, and community service. Founded by his parents, this scholarship seeks to empower the next generation of leaders by providing financial support to students who embody the values that Deputy Shields upheld throughout his life and career.
